Original Painting | Māhu-Tonga (The Southern Cross)
"My paintings are a reflection of my heritage, my culture & my environment. I believe my ability to create kōwhaiwhai (decorative pattern) is a gift from my tūpuna (ancestors), a true blessing that I intend to share with the world.
Upon reading one of my late father Peter Gossage's storybooks - How Maui defied the Goddess of Death, I was inspired by his artworks and ideas around Tatai
Arorangi or Maori Astronomy.
This led me to create this current collection of works.
Each piece is a different element found in the cosmos and it’s maori name, presented in kowhaiwhai
These are my interpretations and learnings around Nga Whetu the stars, Te Marama The Moon,
Te ra the sun and other celestial bodies.
