Navigator Sterling Silver Ring | David Beamish
"Each ring within this series captures a moment for me that remains a tohu (mark/symbol) - a marker dropped to show a pathway. The observer of that tohu interprets it in their own manner, adding to the resonance & meaning - enhancing the mana (essence/authority) & mauri (life principle) of that taonga (treasure) & place".
The Navigator (Kaiwhakatere)
Accompanied by his guardians, this ancestor confidently heads into the unknown to take on all the challenges the journey presents. For me, this is Manawatere, our Ngai Tai tupuna who traveled from Hawaiiki & left his mark on an ancient pohutukawa at Howick for his people to follow. A Ngai Tai whakatauki that is still used by his descendants today says; “Ma te tuhi rapa a Manawatere ka kitea” “By the vivid mark of Manawatere it will be found.”
