Hang Art With The Hangman

Hang Art With The Hangman

As an Art Gallery, there is a range of frequently asked questions that we often have to clarify. Our most popular question above them all is, "Can you please hang/install the artwork within my home?" The response is always the same, "We could, but we aren't the professionals! Let us introduce you to The Hangman - picture hanging & art placement professional".

Although DIY is in our nature as Kiwi's there is a time & place! When it comes to hanging art, it is imperative that you get a professional to get the job done. Not only does this ensure the safety of your valued art piece, but when you step back to view the artwork upon a wall you're guaranteed it won't be on a slight slant.

Let us introduce you to our trusted professional
The Hangman

INTERESTING JOB, HOW DID YOU GET INTO SUCH A GREAT THING?
When I was a young lad, my father (an artist) used to purchase & then install artwork collections for inner city firms - so I tagged along as his very junior hammer hand! Then, upon returning from Denmark in 2005 & wanting to start a business, my Mother (who owns a framing shop in Mt Eden) suggested I start a business installing the items she sold.

HOW DOES THE ARTWORK GET TO THE CLIENTS HOME - CAN YOU PICKUP & DELIVER?
We aren’t able to get involved in the transportation side of artwork: there are insurance complications, plus the cars are small & full of tools & a ladder. We can recommend some professional & very careful art couriers!

WHAT IS THE HARDEST / WEIRDEST PLACE YOU HAVE HAD TO HANG ARTWORK IN?
Hardest installation locations usually involve height: ladders, scaffolds, cherry pickers. In terms of tricky, a house where the overwhelming majority of the walls were sloping (ie not vertical) in towards the centre of the room - & none of the ceilings were level.

HOW FAR HAVE YOU TRAVELLED TO INSTALL ARTWORKS?
We often travel out of town to places such as Mangawhai, Omaha & have traveled South as far as New Plymouth. I’ve been flown to Kerikeri a few times, & one of my clients tried to convince me to travel to the USA to reinstall all the items in their houses there!

WHAT TYPE OF WORKS DO YOU INSTALL?
We install all sorts of things - basically anything that can go on a wall! The majority of the items are pictures & mirrors - but also increasingly sculptures are featuring. We also install bathroom hardware (robe hooks, toilet roll holders etc), TVs, shelves, hose reels, racks - the approach is the same for all items - very accurate measurements, consideration of location, use of suitable fixings.

HAVE YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO HANG ARTWORK FOR ANY INTERESTING / FAMOUS PEOPLE?
I’ve met a huge number of interesting people - from everyday people to sporting superstars, famous musicians, celebrities, business tycoons, Prime Ministers. One of the most memorable was a career criminal who was hugely entertaining. I’ve also made some great friends along the way - one of whom has turned into one of my best friends - we just clicked!

HOW DO MOST PEOPLE FIND OUT ABOUT YOU & ALL THE SERVICE YOU PROVIDE?
A huge percentage of the clients find us via word of mouth - which I guess is a reflection of the quality of our service & workmanship. Some also find us via Google - as well as social media channels.

WHAT DOES A NORMAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU & THE TEAM?
A normal day…hmmm - there is rarely such a thing! We’re often darting all over Auckland, trying to avoid traffic jams, trying to stick to schedules, accomodating unusual requests & clients who have more items than they outlined when booking - it’s always a challenge!

ANY FURTHER THOUGHTS ABOUT OUR DIY NATURE & WANTING TO TACKLE THE JOB OF HANGING ARTWORKS OURSELVES?
There’s a huge difference (as with most services) between the resultant work of a  professional vs an amateur. Having the right skills, understanding, tools - & above all experience - makes a huge difference to how an individual item or collection is displayed. Anyone can bang a nail into a wall & hang a picture on a piece of string - but is it in the right place, at the right height? Is it stable (no!) & will it remain level (no!)  & how does it look alongside that other one that’s also at the wrong height & not level - nor flat…. The question we get asked often : ‘what’s the rule about what height to hang a picture?” Answer: there is no rule - there are some guidelines (such as vertical centre of item at eye height) but then there are lots of other factors that come into play - presence of furniture, stud height, whose eye height.
