Hand painted figure of a Maori Chief. This chief is wearing a kahu kereru, a cloak made from the feathers of the Kereru or wood pigeon. White from the breast and green from the back. He also holds a tewhatewha with a striking blade (rapa) at one end and point (mata) at the other. The front edge was for striking rather than the rapa which gave added weight to the blow. A skilled handler could flick the feathers attached to the rapa to distract an opponent before delivering a deadly blow then finishing him off with the mata.
