The Challenge Begins
Price: $655.00
Unframed print. This print seeks to symbolise "Te Wero" or Challenge that precedes the arrival of a visiting tribe or guests onto "Whenua Maori Maori Land". The "Taiaha" represents the "Wairua Toa - Spirit of the Warrior" who undertakes the challenge to ascertain the intentions of the visitors; the Spiral or "Koru" signifies the intertwining forces of life and death, and the possible decent into chaos, alongside the ascension towards new hope; finally the "Ponga - fern frond" is curled upon itself reflecting a defensive posture, as well as representing the "Tika Peace Offering" which is placed before the visitors. Furthermore, this piece seeks to reflect the intertribal wars of the Maori people since their colonisation of "Aotearoa New Zealand". As well as the struggle for overall rule of New Zealand between the British colonialists and the Maori Chiefs, since the 19th Century.
