Patu
Limited Edition Unframed print.
The fourth print in the series is the Patu, it is an image that has helped in both the formation of New Zealand and Steve's art. This was the last piece to be drawn for this series.
The Patu is both a weapon that was used by Maori to wage warfare and also as a ceremonial piece and has great significant in Maori culture. It represents for Steve both were he has come from with a challenging background but also as a treasure representing his future.
Legend has it that once Maui had fished Te Ika a Maui from the sea he left his brothers to wait on the Island while he consulted the gods to make peace for his actions. However, once Maui had gone his brothers began to argue among themselves about the possession of this new land. They took out their weapons and started pounding away at the catch. The blows on the land created the many mountains and valleys of the North Island today.
The Patu is symbolic in the series to represent the weapons used by Maui's brothers in forming the island into the beautiful country it is today. The image also represents for Steve the beautiful images of his art that he uses in forming his future direction.
This is a limited edition of 75 prints on Artistico Fabriano paper.
