Made from stoneware clay, porcelain, pohutakawa

Measures 340mm x 250mm x 65mm

The traditional Maori way to catch the common coastal fish kahawai was not with baited hooks. Instead, beautiful lures either inlaid with iridescent paua or made with the rib of the paua were drawn through the water, attracting the fish with their flashes of colour.

Pa kahawai (kahawai lures) are composite lures typically constructed using a ground and shaped paua shell set in a wooden or bone shank with a bone barb fixed at the base and bound tightly with flax fibre cord.

This contemporary homage to traditional pa kahawai lures is fashioned out of stoneware clay, combined with a pure white porcelain hook, and then backed with a rich, red-brown shank of pohutakawa.  After making the separate components, Todd then lashes all them together.

To capture the beauty and preciousness of pounamu, the lure has been glazed with a macrocrystalline glaze and fired to over 1300°C.

The resulting finish is an almost iridescent opaque green glass smattered with velvety pale green crystals.  Edged with a pencil outline of pale charcoal, these crystals float on the glaze, creating a shimmering, flickering effect.

Although rarely used, pohutakawa has a beautiful rich grain – reflecting the nature of the wood.
