A traditional pack of 52 playing cards using very cool Maori imagery. These are all made right here in New Zealand from Te Manu Games. Each royal suite has a different image, proud and dignified Chiefs for the Kings, beautifully adorned Wahine for the Queens and Warriors for the Jacks. Also check out the Joker Tioka, he is a real character.
About the Artwork Hazel drew her inspiration for the playing card families from traditional artworks. The Ta Moko and drawings are original, depicting the various suit symbols and unique wairua (spiritual values) of each family member. The Tioka (Joker) symbolises the European influence brought to Aotearoa in the 19th century. Ana designed the Manaia or Spiritual Guardian, which is a bird-like figure in Maori mythology. It acts as a protector over the air, waters and land. This manaia is named Te Manu and protects the kaupapa (core values) of Te Manu Games.
